INTRO

Imprint Hope (IH) works to eliminate the neglect, abuse, abandonment and death of children with disabilities in Uganda by educating communities on childhood disability, providing medical and rehabilitative services to the children affected, and educating and empowering caretakers to care for their child and earn a living wage for their families. The goal of Imprint Hope is to educate and empower families to see their child with a disability as a gift. We envision a world where all children with disabilities are appreciated for their unique talents and provided an opportunity to actualize their full potential. Imprint Hope’s operations are based at our rehabilitation and education center and main office in Masese, Jinja.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

As a Speech and Language Therapist at Imprint Hope, you will make a key contribution to IH’s mission by ensuring the effectiveness, efficiency and implementation of the required skill and research behind the therapeutic process. Your interpersonal skills, empathy and clinical expertise will help us provide culturally appropriate and evidence based therapy sessions to make a positive impact to the children and families under Imprint Hope’s program. As a Speech and Language Therapist at Imprint Hope you must embody the core values of integrity, respect, understanding, teamwork, and excellence. qualifications

  • Must hold a valid state license and ASHA’s Certificate of Clinical Competence or international equivalent. 
  • Must be committed to the mission and vision of Imprint Hope.
  • Must demonstrate humility, teachability, and a desire for professional growth.
  • At least two years experience with pediatrics, primarily in the area of feeding and swallowing.
  • Must be willing to make a 6-month – one year commitment.
  • Preferred experience living or working in a developing country.

duties & responsibilities

  • Perform initial evaluations that encompass gathering relevant past medical history and systems reviews in order to determine appropriate tests and measures based on findings.
  • Synthesize information obtained from the examination to determine therapeutic interventions.
  • Identify impairments and its impact on function and develop a plan of care that integrates therapy into the lifestyle of the family.
  • Ensure patient education is family centered by considering family lifestyle, environment, learning needs and collaborative goal setting.
  • Demonstrate professional judgment informed by professional standards, evidence based therapeutic interventions (including current literature and established best practice), and patient/client values throughout the therapeutic process.
  • Communicates with physicians, other team members, third party participants and family regarding the patient’s goals and progress.
  • Works with translators and/or interpreters to communicate with caregivers and other professionals. 
  • Participates in patient conferences as assigned as a member of the health care team.
  • Takes responsibility for seeking supervision or consultation in relation to clinical performance.
  • Actively contributes to improvement plans and effectively utilizes feedback.
  • Meets competency expectations in explaining symptoms, prognosis and functional limitations for a variety of diagnostic groups.
  • Makes discharge recommendations appropriate to the child and their family in consideration of the child’s prognosis, role expectations, and knowledge of community resources.

  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date information on all therapy sessions performed on a daily basis.
  • Produce required reports for the occupational therapy department on assessment data, including progress reports, goals, discharge summaries reports etc.

  • Actively promote Imprint Hope policies at all times.
  • Attend scheduled meetings within the therapy department and multidisciplinary team at Imprint Hope.
  • Have general knowledge of computers and technology, and be familiar with technology resources such as; Google Drive, Google email, Microsoft Office, etc.
  • Continue your own professional development.
  • Keep updated with reforms and policies regarding Speech Language Pathology.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team at Imprint Hope.
  • Promote teamwork and collaboration within the department.
  • Seek to have cultural sensitivity and humility in all aspects of the position, studying the culture of Uganda.

  • Reports to: Director
  • Other Key Working Relationships: Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Community Development Officer, Clinical Psychologist, Nurse and Nutritionist. 

level of effort

  • 40 hours per week; Mon-Fri 8:30-5:30

salary

Imprint Hope provides housing and a monthly stipend for this position. Foreign national applicants are responsible for raising their own additional support during their time with Imprint Hope.
